Hexicon Takes Full Control of Sweden’s Mareld Floating Wind Project

Floating offshore wind developer Hexicon has moved to fully acquire the Mareld offshore wind project in Sweden, strengthening its position in the growing renewable energy sector. The development highlights continued momentum in offshore wind investments as Europe pushes to expand clean energy capacity and support long-term electrification goals.

Stockholm-based Hexicon has signed an agreement to acquire the remaining 50% stake in the Mareld floating offshore wind project from its joint venture partner Mainstream Renewable Power. Following the transaction, Hexicon will gain full ownership and operational control of the project. Under the agreement, the company will pay an initial consideration of SEK 1, alongside a potential milestone payment of €4.5 million if the project secures an offtake contract through a future auction process. The Mareld project is currently awaiting a final approval decision from the Swedish government under the Swedish Economic Zone Act. The project previously received a recommendation for approval from the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland in June 2024. Once fully developed, Mareld is expected to generate up to 12 TWh of electricity annually — enough to supply around 2 million households. The project is viewed as strategically important as electricity demand in western Sweden is forecast to double by 2030. Hexicon CEO Marcus Thor said full ownership would allow the company to accelerate project development and strengthen its long-term value potential.

Why This Matters

  • Floating offshore wind projects are becoming increasingly important for Europe’s energy transition and maritime infrastructure growth.
  • Large-scale renewable projects could create new opportunities for offshore construction vessels, marine services, and port operations.
  • Rising electricity demand is driving governments and developers to accelerate offshore energy investments.
  • Full project ownership may allow faster decision-making and execution as competition in offshore wind intensifies.

Hexicon’s move to fully acquire the Mareld project reflects growing confidence in floating offshore wind as a long-term energy solution. For the maritime and offshore sectors, projects like Mareld are expected to play a major role in shaping future offshore operations, vessel demand, and regional energy security.
