The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has named John Denholm CBE as its new Chairman, marking a significant leadership transition as the maritime industry faces geopolitical uncertainty, regulatory transformation, and the race towards decarbonisation.
The appointment reflects the industry’s focus on experienced leadership as global shipping adapts to one of its most complex operating environments in recent history.
John Denholm Elected to Lead ICS Board
The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has unanimously elected John Denholm CBE as Chairman of its Board of Directors during the organisation’s Annual General Meeting held at Palazzo Valentini in Rome, Italy.
Denholm succeeds Emanuele Grimaldi, who concludes a four-year term after steering the organisation through a period marked by supply chain disruptions, security challenges, evolving regulations, and changing global trade dynamics.
A chartered accountant by profession, Denholm joined the family-owned shipping company J. & J. Denholm before becoming its Chief Executive in 1993. Today, he serves as Executive Chairman of both J. & J. Denholm and Denholm Energy Services.
His industry credentials extend well beyond his own company. Over the years, he has held key leadership roles, including serving as President of both the UK Chamber of Shipping and BIMCO, giving him extensive experience in representing shipowners at both national and international levels.
Speaking after his appointment, Denholm described the role as a privilege and acknowledged that he assumes leadership during a period of exceptional uncertainty for global shipping.
He highlighted the wide range of challenges confronting the industry—from geopolitical conflicts and maritime security risks to technological advancement, the energy transition, and shifting trade routes. Despite these pressures, he emphasised that shipping continues to play its fundamental role in sustaining global commerce by transporting essential goods, energy, and raw materials worldwide.
Denholm said he looks forward to working closely with the ICS Board and Secretariat as the industry navigates this critical phase of transformation.
Recognition for Outgoing Chairman
ICS Secretary General Thomas A. Kazakos welcomed Denholm’s appointment, noting that his decades of experience as a shipowner, business executive, and industry representative position him well to lead the organisation during a rapidly changing era.
Kazakos also paid tribute to outgoing Chairman Emanuele Grimaldi, recognising his leadership during one of the most demanding periods for international shipping.
During Grimaldi’s tenure, the industry responded to attacks on commercial vessels, disruptions to major global trade routes, significant changes in international trading patterns, and an expanding wave of global maritime regulations. His leadership helped guide ICS members through these unprecedented challenges while strengthening the organisation’s role as the global voice of shipowners.
