UniSea Expands Maritime Software Portfolio with Acquisition of AI Inspection Specialist Kaiko Systems
UniSea Expands Maritime Software Portfolio with Acquisition of AI Inspection Specialist Kaiko Systems
Building a Stronger Maritime Digital Platform
Maritime software provider UniSea has acquired Berlin-based Kaiko Systems, an AI-driven inspection and vessel intelligence company, in a move that significantly broadens its fleet management capabilities. The combined organization will support more than 4,000 vessels worldwide, bringing together UniSea’s fleet management platform—used across over 3,000 vessels—with Kaiko’s inspection and compliance solutions serving more than 1,000 vessels. The acquisition marks another step in UniSea’s evolution from a company traditionally focused on HSEQ management into a broader Fleet Management System (FMS) provider covering maintenance, procurement, dry-docking, compliance, and vessel performance. According to UniSea CEO Kurt Roar Vilhelmsen, the addition of Kaiko strengthens the company’s ability to support frontline vessel operations while maintaining the specialist expertise that customers value.
Why Kaiko Matters
Founded in 2020, Kaiko Systems has built a reputation around digitalizing one of shipping’s most resource-intensive activities: vessel inspections. Its mobile-first platform helps crews prepare for inspections, conduct self-assessments, manage vessel condition reporting, and improve readiness for increasingly demanding compliance requirements such as SIRE 2.0 and Port State Control inspections. Rather than relying on paper-based processes and fragmented reporting, Kaiko enables structured digital data collection directly from vessels, helping operators identify issues earlier and standardize reporting across fleets. The company’s platform also uses artificial intelligence and computer vision technologies to assist with tasks such as:
- Corrosion detection
- Image verification
- Automated document recognition
- Inspection workflow optimization                                                      For crews onboard, these tools can reduce administrative workload while improving the quality and consistency of inspection data.
Financial Backing Supports Growth Strategy
The acquisition was funded through a significant capital investment from Adelis Equity, the Swedish private equity firm that became the majority owner of UniSea in 2022. Since partnering with UniSea, Adelis has supported the company’s expansion strategy, helping accelerate product development, increase workforce capacity, and strengthen market growth. This latest transaction follows UniSea’s acquisition of dry-docking software provider Maindeck in 2023, indicating a continued strategy of building a comprehensive suite of specialized maritime software solutions under one umbrella.
Industry Trend: Fewer Systems, Better Integration
The deal reflects a broader shift occurring across the maritime technology sector. Shipowners and managers increasingly prefer integrated software ecosystems rather than managing multiple disconnected applications for inspections, maintenance, procurement, safety management, and compliance. As regulations become more complex and fleets generate larger volumes of operational data, the ability to connect information across departments is becoming a key competitive advantage. Under the new structure, Kaiko Systems will continue operating as a dedicated product with its own development team and roadmap. Existing customers will not need to change their current workflows, while new integration capabilities will allow data to move more seamlessly between UniSea and Kaiko platforms.
AI Takes a Larger Role in Maritime Operations
One of the most significant aspects of the acquisition is the addition of Kaiko’s AI expertise to the UniSea ecosystem. Artificial intelligence is increasingly moving beyond experimentation and into practical vessel operations. Inspection management, defect identification, reporting automation, and condition monitoring are emerging as some of the earliest areas where AI can deliver measurable operational value. By incorporating Kaiko’s capabilities, UniSea aims to help customers automate routine tasks, improve operational efficiency, and reduce administrative burden across fleet operations. With nearly 30 years of industry experience and a platform now comprising approximately 40 modules, UniSea appears positioned to continue expanding through both product development and future acquisitions.
Why This Matters
- For shipowners: Greater integration between inspection, compliance, maintenance, and fleet management systems can improve operational visibility and decision-making.
- For seafarers: Digital inspection tools and AI-assisted reporting can reduce paperwork and simplify compliance-related tasks onboard.
- For fleet managers: Better data flow between operational systems can support more efficient planning, defect management, and regulatory readiness.
- For maritime technology providers: The acquisition highlights the growing importance of AI-enabled software and integrated platforms in the future maritime digital ecosystem.
The UniSea–Kaiko deal is more than a simple acquisition—it reflects the direction maritime software is heading. As shipping companies seek smarter, connected, and AI-powered solutions, integrated digital ecosystems are rapidly becoming the new standard for fleet operations.
