Damen and FN Herstal Join Forces to Develop Next-Generation Naval and Unmanned Defence Systems
Shipbuilder Damen and defence specialist FN Herstal are strengthening cooperation in the naval defence sector.
A new agreement aims to combine shipbuilding platforms with advanced weapons and security technologies to support future naval operations in Europe and within NATO.
Partnership Focuses on Integrated Naval Defence Systems
Damen Shipyards Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with FN Herstal to collaborate on next-generation maritime defence solutions.
The agreement, signed on March 12 during the Brussels European Defence Exhibition & Conference (BEDEX), establishes a framework for integrating FN Herstal’s defence systems with Damen’s naval vessels and maritime platforms.
The partnership will focus on joint innovation, engineering collaboration, and the development of advanced maritime technologies — including unmanned surface vessels (USVs).
Supporting Future Naval Operations in Europe
The solutions developed through this partnership are expected to support operational requirements for the Belgian and Dutch navies under the BeNeSam Cooperation Accord, a long-standing naval collaboration between Belgium and the Netherlands.
Beyond national fleets, the companies aim to contribute to wider European and NATO maritime defence capabilities.
Damen brings expertise in modular shipbuilding, naval integration, and platform design, while FN Herstal contributes defence and security technologies that can be integrated into naval vessels.
The goal is to deliver systems designed for complex maritime operations — from conventional naval missions to emerging security challenges at sea.
Industrial Cooperation and Defence Innovation
Both companies say the collaboration will strengthen defence industrial ecosystems in Belgium and the Netherlands while promoting technological innovation in maritime security.
The agreement also aims to improve coordination with institutional stakeholders and defence organisations, ensuring the solutions remain operationally relevant for modern naval forces.
A key focus area is the development of future-ready platforms, particularly unmanned and integrated systems that can operate alongside conventional naval vessels.
Industry leaders from both companies described the partnership as an opportunity to combine complementary expertise to deliver more capable and integrated maritime defence platforms.
Why This Matters
- Naval technology evolving: Modern navies are increasingly integrating advanced sensors, weapons, and unmanned systems into ship platforms.
- Stronger European defence cooperation: Partnerships like this strengthen regional defence capabilities and industrial collaboration.
- Growth of unmanned naval systems: USVs are becoming a key part of future maritime security and surveillance operations.
- Shipbuilding innovation: Integrated platform design allows navies to deploy more flexible and technologically advanced vessels.
As maritime security challenges evolve, naval forces are seeking more integrated and technology-driven solutions. Partnerships like the Damen–FN Herstal collaboration highlight how shipbuilding and defence technology are increasingly converging in the future of naval operations. ⚓
